The Your Voice, Dublin’s Energy Future survey ran from May – September 2025 and asked Dubliners to tell us their views on how energy is used and produced in Dublin.

About the survey

The Your Voice, Dublin’s Energy Future survey invited the public to share their views on how Dublin can move away from fossil fuels and become more energy-efficient.

Through this survey, we aimed to better understand:

  • How people in Dublin feel about their energy use
  • What actions people in Dublin plan to take or would like to take but feel unable to
  • Who is considered most responsible for climate action and the level of confidence in those actors
  • The level of support for community-based climate action

Key statistics

Most common house type is semi-detached / end-of-terrace (44%)
41% of respondents own their home with a mortgage or loan
78% drive either sometimes or frequently

Everyday energy use

The vast majority (97%) of respondents think about their energy use either a lot of the time (62%) or sometimes (35%).
Cost and bills (44%) is the most important factor for respondents when thinking about their energy use, outranking environment and climate (28%) and comfort and warmth (27%).
Comfort and warmth was the most important factor for respondents aged 65 or over.

say they have avoided turning on the heating or using appliances to save on energy bills.

This figure is even higher among respondents renting from a private landlord, with 89% of this saying that have avoided turning on the heating or using appliances to save on energy bills.

Within this, almost half (46%) say that they do this regularly (i.e. at least once a week)

Top 3 actions that are most important for Dublin

1. Using renewable technologies to power and heat our homes, workplaces and other buildings (61%)
2. Energy efficiency upgrades for homes and buildings (56%)
3. Better access to public transport as an alternative to car use (51%)

Actions people plan to take in the next five years

1. Switch to an energy supplier that uses renewable energy (29%).
Switch from petrol or diesel to an electric vehicle (28%).
Install renewable energy technologies (26%).

Actions people want to do but feel unable to

1. Install renewable energy technologies (36%)
2. Switch from petrol or diesel to an electric vehicle (30%)
3. Improve their home’s insultation (26%).

Top 3 benefits to moving Dublin away from fossil fuels

1. Better air quality and improved health (70%)
2. Reducing our contribution to climate change (66%)
3. More independence and security of energy supply (42%)

Acting on climate and energy

78%
At 78%, survey respondents feel that the current Government is most responsible for moving Dublin away from fossil fuels.
64%
However, 64% are not at all confident in the current Government’s ability to deliver on climate action, while just 2% say they are very confident.
68%
say they rarely or never have a say on climate action initiatives in their local community.
