GEMINI
The GEMINI project seeks to advance geothermal energy adoption throughout Ireland. Featuring four demonstration sites, GEMINI highlights diverse applications of geothermal technology across various sectors.
About the project
GEMINI (Geothermal Energy Momentum on the Island of Ireland) is a pioneering cross-border initiative demonstrating how geothermal energy can play a practical and scalable role in decarbonising heat across Ireland. Supported by the PEACEPLUS Programme and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), the project is helping to build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to accelerate the deployment of geothermal energy systems.
Led by Codema, GEMINI brings together partners from across Ireland and Northern Ireland to design, deliver and evaluate a series of geothermal demonstration projects. These include a range of public and community buildings, showcasing how geothermal technologies can be adapted to different settings—from community facilities and academic institutions to education and training infrastructure.
By implementing and monitoring these installations, GEMINI will generate practical evidence on system performance, technical design, cost considerations and operational delivery. This real-world learning will help to reduce uncertainty around geothermal deployment and provide clear, actionable guidance for future projects, including technical standards, procurement approaches, governance models and business cases.
Key focus
A key focus of GEMINI is also the development of skills and capacity across the geothermal sector. The project will support training and knowledge exchange, helping to build a skilled workforce of engineers, installers, drillers and energy professionals capable of delivering geothermal solutions at scale. It will also contribute to the development of shared approaches to accreditation and professional standards across the island of Ireland.
Beyond its technical outputs, GEMINI is designed to support a just and inclusive energy transition. By demonstrating practical low-carbon heating solutions in public and community settings, the project aims to increase access to clean energy innovation, support local development and contribute to national and regional climate goals.
Through collaboration, demonstration and shared learning, GEMINI is helping to lay the foundations for a viable geothermal sector and supporting the transition to a more sustainable, resilient energy system for the future.
Codema's role in the project
As lead partner, Codema is responsible for providing strategic leadership and coordinating the delivery of the GEMINI project. Working closely with project partners across Ireland and Northern Ireland, Codema oversees project implementation, facilitates collaboration and ensures that activities remain aligned with GEMINI’s objectives of accelerating geothermal energy deployment and supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.
Codema acts as the central point of coordination for the partnership, bringing together technical experts, public bodies and stakeholders to share knowledge, overcome challenges and maximise project impact. The organisation is also responsible for overall project governance, financial management and engagement with the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), ensuring the project is delivered effectively, transparently and in line with PEACEPLUS programme requirements.
