Codema hosts DISCO project Thematic Event and site visit

We recently welcomed the DISCO project partners and their stakeholders to Dublin for a two-day event, focused on advancing efficient waste heat utilisation and strengthening technical expertise across regions.

Held on the 22nd and 23rd of April, the event brought together DISCO project partners and their local stakeholders to explore the latest developments in district heating and cooling systems. The first day, hosted at The Fumbally Stables, was a Thematic Event centred on the technological aspects of the DISCO project, including infrastructure analysis, innovative heating and cooling solutions and data-driven approaches to waste heat recovery .

The event featured a keynote presentation from Janne Kerttula, President of Euroheat and Power, presentations from Codema on the potential for waste heat utilisation in Ireland, a workshop session on good practices contributions, presentations on technological aspects and a round-table panel discussion with experts from across Europe.

Topics ranged from improving resilience in Arctic district heating systems to harnessing energy from agricultural and food waste. The Thematic Event concluded with a breakout exercise and discussions among partners and stakeholders on the challenges and solutions for waste heat utilisation in Europe, with a strong emphasis on interregional learning and capacity building.

Day two

Day two focused on practical application, with a study visit to the Tallaght District Heating Scheme. Attendees experienced first-hand the operation of Ireland’s first large-scale district heating system, followed by discussions on implementation challenges and opportunities. A project consortium meeting was then held in the afternoon to review progress on the DISCO project, share policy updates and plan future collaboration.

By facilitating knowledge exchange and showcasing innovative technologies, this two-day event marked an important step in supporting cities and regions to accelerate the adoption of sustainable district heating and cooling solutions across Europe.
