ThermStore RD&D project kicks off after funding secured from the SEAI
We are delighted to announce the launch of the ThermStore RD&D project in April which was awarded funding from the 2025 SEAI National Energy Funding Programme.
About the project
The ThermStore RD&D project evaluates how Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES) can help decarbonise Ireland’s heating sector by storing surplus renewable and waste heat underground for later use.
Funding
Funding was secured through the SEAI National Energy Funding Programme – an initiative which supports Irish researchers, innovators and industry leaders to accelerate Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon, secure and sustainable energy system.
As part of this programme, government funding of €20.5 million was awarded to over 30 cutting-edge energy research projects and fellowships, which together, cover a wide variety of research areas, from offshore wind and green hydrogen to smart buildings and carbon capture.
Codema's role
Codema, as Dublin’s Energy Agency, will bring a range of expertise to the project, from heat network planning, energy systems modelling, sector integration and stakeholder engagement. This will ensure that the project’s technical outputs will be relevant to district heating schemes – both operational and planned.
The project will be led by UCD and in addition to Codema, the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geoscience, DCU and Build Geothermal Ltd are also project partners.
