Codema part of new EU project to drive the use of waste heat in Europe

Codema is proud to be part of a newly launched Interreg Europe project, which sets out to accelerate the use of waste heat across Europe.

The DISCO (Advancing DIStrict heating and COoling solutions for efficient waste heat utilization) project brings together 10 partner organisations to test and develop innovative solutions for capturing and reusing industrial waste heat in district heating and cooling systems.

Why waste heat matters

Industries across Europe give off a lot of heat as part of their day-to-day operations. Most of this heat goes to waste. If we could collect it and use it to heat or cool buildings, it would help reduce emissions and cut costs. The technology to do this already exists but many public bodies don’t yet have the right plans or resources to put it in place.

DISCO addresses this issue by helping regional and local governments to improve their energy strategies, sharing best practices and testing new policy approaches. The project is led by North Sweden Energy Agency (Energikontor Norr), based in Luleå, Sweden.

Codema's role in the project

 

Codema’s key role will be to support Kildare County Council, an associate partner in the project. Codema will help Kildare County Council to apply the findings of the project to its own Climate Action Plan and County Development Plan, with the aim of improving the local authority’s overall policies regarding waste heat.

Codema will also participate in dissemination and knowledge-sharing activities.

Project focus areas

The DISCO project runs until 2029 and the partnership will share best practices and improve policy instruments through four thematic areas:

  • Technical considerations
  • Economic potential
  • Regulatory requirements
  • Stakeholder cooperation and capacity building

Learning from EU partners

DISCO includes 10 partners from across Europe. Through mutual learning and policy exchange, DISCO will support the decarbonisation of the heating and cooling sector and contribute to meeting the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive targets.
