Dublin ranks 21st out of 30 cities in Siemen's European Green City Index which measures the current environmental performance of Europe's major cities across 30 indicators.
While this index highlights the fact Dublin still has a lot of work to do to improve its ranking, the index references many initiatives that Codema is working on that will have future benefits for the city, such as the Dublin City Climate Change Strategy that Codema prepared on behalf of Dublin City Council. This documment outlines a plan to meet a targeted 20-30% reducted ino greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, as part of Dublin City's membership to the Covenant of Mayors. The document focuses on energy, planning, transport, waste management and biodiversity.
Dublin ranks 18th in the category but the index acknowledges the work that Codema has carried out through the Minus 3% project to help Dublin City Council to reduce its energy consumption by 3% each year, with an overall target of 33% by 2020. The first-year results of this project are very encouraging and have exceeded the 3% target.
While Dublin's buildings ranks poorly, the Green City Index makes references to the Dublin City Sustainable Energy Action Plan 2010-2020 which Codema developed on behalf of the Council. The Action Plan identifies huge potential for energy-savings in the city's buildings and Codema is currently working with Dublin City Council to help improve the energy ratings of Dublin's social housing stock.
