Sustainable Office

The Sustainable Office strategy aims to promote sustainability in the work place through a process of reducing environmental impacts, promoting sustainable travel for employees and increasing social cohesion between businesses and the local community.  The Sustainable Office is one which considers the three spheres of sustainable development in its day to day operations and its future activities.  It can be represented as follows:

The first steps towards implementing a sustainable office is to record the current environmental impacts of the business’s activities.  This is achieved by calculating a carbon footprint and analysing the procurement policy for all products that may be hazardous to the environment.  Once this is achieved, a set of targets for the next business year are set and a system to record and store the necessary data for year-on-year calculations is devised. As the strategy progresses, the social and economic aspects of sustainability are introduced.

Codema is currently helping to implement the Sustainable Office within Dublin City Council and its financial and corporate services departments have already initiated the strategy and set targets for the coming year.  This process reduces the overall carbon footprint of the council, saves money through energy and procurement behavioural change and educates employees of the environmental impacts of modern office activity.
