The Finglas Leisure and Community Centre was a flagship Dublin City Council project and demonstrated the Council’s commitment in the area of environmental savings and sustainable development. The centre was officially opened on 21st April 2004 and is now fully operational.
CODEMA was involved in the following areas, water conservation advice, evaluation of Finglas pool verses other DCC pools and examination of the benefits of CHP plant. CODEMA also looked at the issue of compliance with the upcoming Water Conservation Bye Laws and the Buildings Directive.
The buildings contain the leading and most efficient water and energy devices. Efficient sanitary and plumbing fittings will lead to substantial environmental savings of 4,952 m3 water/yr, resulting in saving €6,734/yr.
The Finglas Pool houses a gas powered Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant
(110 KWe). CHP is the generation of thermal and electrical energy in a single process, with an efficiency of 80-90%. The advantages of using a CHP unit at the Finglas Leisure Centre can be summarised as follows:
Reduced energy costsReduced CO2, SO2 and particulates
