Green e-Motion

The Green eMotion project aims to create a unique and user-friendly framework for green electromobility in the EU.   The Irish launch of the Green eMotion project took place on 21st June 2011 in the Long Room Hub, Trinity College.

The event was officially launched by the Minister for Energy, Pat Rabbitte TD, and the Provost of Trinity College, John Hegarty, CEO of the ESB, Padraig McManus and Codema's Director Gerry Wardell were all in attendance.

Ireland will receive €1.5 million in funding from the EU to develop electric transport, to be shared among the four Irish partners; Codema, the ESB, Trinity College and Cork City Council.

The funding is part of a European Commission initiative, with the value of €41.8m, to develop knowledge and experience of emobility in selected regions within Europe.

About 2,000 electric vehicles and 3,500 charging stations are part of a countrywide rollout in Ireland in a partnership between industry, manufacturers, local authorities and universities.

In Dublin, Codema will bring together the four Dublin local authorities and the ESB, with the aim of integrating electric vehicles within an overall sustainable energy plan for a green and energy-smart city – with possible ‘smart energy zones’.

Green eMotion is part of the European Green Cars Initiative and is funded under the Seventh Research and Development Framework Programme (FP7) in order to compare the 12 ongoing regional and national electro mobility initiatives in eight different EU member states. It will also compare the different technology approaches and contribute to the identification of the best solutions for the European market.

The project will involve different types of electric vehicles, the development of smart grids, innovative information and communication technologies solutions, and urban mobility concepts.

Codema is delighted to be working with its Irish partners (the ESB, TCD and Cork City Council) and the four Dublin local authorities on this Green eMotion project. 

It aims to create a unique and user-friendly framework for green electromobility in the EU and sets out to achieve the following for Dublin:

• A reduction in CO₂ levels for the Dublin City region through the implementation of an e-vehicle system for the city.  This will form part of the city’s overall plan to reduce CO₂ levels beyond the EU targets of 2020.  It will also support the Dublin City Climate Change Strategy 2008-2012 which aims to reduce the five million tonnes of carbon dioxide that the city emits each year.
• The creation of sustainable solutions for the city’s transport network; e-vehicles, more efficient public transport, improved cycle ways, etc.
• Improved traffic management for the city.
• To work with our European partners to establish best practice for the implementation of an e-vehicles network in the Dublin city region.
• Similarly, to exchange relevant information and know-how in an EU-wide context.

As part of this project, Codema aims to carry out the following activities:

• Facilitating the participation and communication between the four Dublin local authorities and the ESB.
• Integration of electric vehicles within an overall sustainable energy plan for a green and energy smart city – possible ‘smart energy zones’.
• Communication and promotion of the e-vehicles system among key stakeholders and the general public.

There are 42 partners involved in the Green e-Motion project and funding has been awarded by the European Commission under the FP7 programme.
