Energy Smart Community

Latest News: Following on from our recent membership meetings, we are delighted to invite you to join our Northside or Southside clusters for €99.  Closing date for membership is 2nd July.

If you are interested in taking the next step towards a warmer, more comfortable home, then please contact us to join your local Energy Smart Community.

What is an Energy Smart Community?
The Energy Smart Community is a not-for-profit scheme which allows you and your neighbours to join together to improve the energy-efficiency of your homes at a lower price than going it alone.

How does it work?
The Energy Smart Community works on the simple principle that by bringing homeowners together in a cluster, you can save on the cost and hassle of carrying out energy-efficiency improvements through a group tender process.

Why should I join?
The Energy Smart Community is run by Codema, a leading sustainable energy agency which acts as energy adviser to the four local authorities in Dublin.  By joining the Energy Smart Community, you will have work carried out at the lowest price possible by contractors of the highest standard that have been thoroughly vetted by Codema.

We provide you with expert, impartial advice and act as facilitator between you and the contractor throughout the entire process, removing any hassle for you and your neighbours.
As Codema is a not-for-profit energy agency, we are completely independent of any contractors.  Therefore our only interest is in looking out for you and your community.

There are six main steps to forming an Energy Smart Community:
1. We help you to form an Energy Smart cluster in your area.
2. You get an energy survey carried out on your home.
3. You choose from a list of improvements specific to your home.
4. We put your job out to public tender so that you can get the best price possible.
5. You apply for the grant and sign a contract with the winning contractor.
6. We carry out quality control measures and help with finalising the grants.

Join for €99

Codema offers membership to the Energy Smart Community for €99.  The benefits of joining include:

  • Joining a cluster of homeowners in your area for a group tender, meaning that you will get the work carried out at the lowest price possible
  • Independent home energy advice
  • Co-ordinating the entire tender process from start to finish with contractors of the highest standard that have been thoroughly vetted by Codema
  • Quality control of the works
  • We act as a facilitator and keep you informed throughout the entire process and answer any questions you might have
  • Social and environmental benefits for your community

At what stage do I become a member of the Energy Smart Community?

You join the Energy Smart Community when you decide what work you want to have done on your home and you become part of the group tender.

Background to the scheme:

There were three main reasons for setting up the Energy Smart Community.  Firstly, it was set up to offer Dublin communities an independent, neighbour-friendly service for homeowners interested in improving the energy performance of their homes.  There are currently two government grants available to private homeowners through Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI): the Home Energy Saving scheme and the Greener Homes scheme.  The Energy Smart Community allows homeowners to make the most of these grants through a community ‘cluster’ formation.  Another main reason for setting up Energy Smart Community is to offer homeowners complete piece of mind – Codema is a not-for-profit energy agency and is completely independent of all contractors.  Therefore, its only interest is in looking out for the local community.  Finally, the Energy Smart Community was set up to promote environmental living in Dublin neighbourhoods in a way that makes financial sense and encourages social interaction.  Codema is working with Gavin Harte on this project.  Gavin is a former director of An Taisce and was founder of Ireland’s first eco-village in Cloughjordan, Co Tipperary.
