Good practice at Ballymun Regeneration.
The Ballymun Regeneration Project is creating a new town in the north Dublin suburb, which is sustainable economically, socially, environmentally and physically, while preserving the old community, working with the existing tenants and providing the type of town they want.
The approach to energy is person-centred, and therefore puts the focus on the end-user as an important factor in achieving energy efficiency. It has been found that energy solutions which are interwoven with the fabric of social needs are more likely to succeed than those based upon technology alone.
The energy and environment strategy for Ballymun defines best practice for energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and water conservation across 100% of the site. It also allows for a percentage of the new houses to have innovative features and renewable energy sources.
The project, which is overseen by Ballymun Regeneration Ltd, involves the construction of 4,000 new houses in 5 new neighbourhoods, along with a new civic centre, a sports and leisure centre and the ‘Axis’ arts centre with a 200-seat theatre.
CODEMA worked with Ballymun Regeneration in Phase 1 to oversee the incorporation of the energy and environmental features into the development.
