Codema Director to Chair Dublin Climate Change Meeting

Codema's Director Gerry Wardell will chair the Dublin Climate Change Meeting at UCD's Urban Institute next Wednesday, 2nd December.

This new initiative will bring together the technical and research experts to discuss how climate change is affecting and will affect Dublin in the future.  It will also facilitate knowledge exchanges between engineers and planners in the four Dublin Local Authorities.

In climate change science, the role of cities has been identified as critical. It is the activities within cities that are driving global climate change and, as most are located in low-lying coastal areas, they are vulnerable to its impacts. However, until recently, there has been little research at a city-scale primarily because of their size and complexity. Nevertheless, it is apparent that human-cause global climate change can only be tackled effectively at an urban scale.

This half-day meeting will bring together experts and policy-makers from Dublin and London to discuss climate change and its impact on cities. It will focus attention on what information currently exists and where the gaps are, both in terms of knowledge and applications. Its timing is prescient given that the United Nations Climate Change Conference will occur in Copenhagen in December 7-18 and will likely set the agenda on the regulation of carbon emissions for the next decade.

This meeting is the first of a series that will be been jointly organised by UCD, NUI Maynooth and Codema and is focussed on climate change issues as they relate to cities and Dublin in particular. These meetings will be organised on a bi-annual basis and are designed to facilitate discussions between policy-makers and those working on climate change issues at an urban scale. A feature of these events will be presentations based on the experiences of other cities in dealing with this issue. In the December meeting, Professor Mike Davies will give a presentation on LUCID, a project that is researching how cities can adapt to a changing climate.
