Eco-Buddy System to be Introduced as part of the Switch Off Campaign

As part of the ongoing Switch Off campaign, Codema will be working with Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to introduce an eco-buddy system within all staff departments this winter.

Becoming an eco-buddy couldn’t be easier – simply team up into groups of three, ideally with the two nearest people to your workspace.  If one of your buddy’s computers is left on and they have left the building for the day, you switch it off for them.
You can increase the fun element by keeping track of how well your team is doing; maybe introduce ‘rewards’ for when your eco-buddies switch everything off properly or ‘penalties’ when appliances are left on overnight.  You can also compete with other teams within your department – it’s up to you!

The eco-buddy system can also extend beyond the workstation; if you’re last to leave the office in the evening, why not take two minutes to ensure lights and communal equipment such as photocopiers, printers and kettles are switched off.

By signing up as an eco-buddy, you will not only be helping to reduce cost, you will also be doing your bit for the environment.  Thanks to support of staff members in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the Switch Off campaign has already increased energy-awareness within all departments.  However, monitors and printers are still the main ‘problem areas’ when it comes to energy consumption, so please pay particular attention to ensure that these appliances are correctly switched off when not needed.

You can successfully shut down your computer and monitor in just 2 easy steps:

1. Select ‘Shut Down’ from the ‘Start’ menu on your computer (usually on the bottom left hand corner of your screen).  Make sure ‘Restart’ or ‘Log Off’ isn’t selected – logging off or restarting the system will not power off your workstation.
2. N.B.  Even if your computer shuts down successfully, your monitor could still be on and using energy.  You will know if your monitor is still on if the orange light on the power button is still glowing.  Simply press the power button and the light will go out – your monitor is now properly switched off! If the orange light fails to switch off, please inform IT.

If you are a staff member in DLR CoCo and would like to start an eco-buddy team, please email Dean Eaton (deaton@DLRCOCO.ie) with your team member’s names. Teams signing up as eco-buddies will be eligible for future spot prizes!
