South Dublin County Council approved Sustainable Energy Action Plan

13th May, 2013

Codema is delighted to announce that on Monday 13th May 2013, the elected members of South Dublin County Council approved the South Dublin Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP). The South Dublin SEAP has been prepared as part of the Council’s participation in the EU Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) funded Leadership for Energy Action and Planning (LEAP) project.

The South Dublin Sustainable Energy Action Plan sets out how South Dublin County can take the lead in addressing EU and national energy reduction targets to 2020. The SEAP has been undertaken in partnership with the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) and eight other local authorities across the EU, as part of the Leadership for Energy Action and Planning (LEAP) programme. The South Dublin SEAP has also been prepared with input from Codema and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

Following the approval of the South Dublin SEAP, the Plan will be submitted to the EU Covenant of Mayors office for formal verification. The Covenant of Mayors is an initiative of the European Commission that brings together Mayors from across Europe, in a shared, voluntary commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by a minimum target of 20% by 2020. In the coming years, the Council is committed to monitoring the progress of the SEAP and reporting to the Covenant of Mayors regularly on the progress of SEAP Action implementation, energy consumption savings and CO2 reductions achieved in pursuit of reaching 2020 energy targets.

Mayor Cathal King has stated,

I welcome the approval of the South Dublin Sustainable Energy Action Plan. The preparation of this Plan demonstrates the Council’s commitment to showing leadership in addressing the energy challenge and we are now in a position to commit to the Covenant of Mayors protocol, by submitting our SEAP for formal EU verification and approval. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Codema, SEAI and all our European partners in the Leadership for Energy Action and Planning project, who assisted us in the preparation of the South Dublin SEAP.
